How do you introduce yourself? I have to say, sometimes I don’t know who I am. Of course, Karen is my given name. But in that moment of introduction was I a wife, chef, mom, maid, chauffeur, project manager, blogger? It’s easy to get lost in the day to day, from day to day.
A nametag could be helpful. We’ve all seen and worn the ones with the preprinted greeting, “Hello My Name Is” at the top with white space below for you to write in your name, preferably with bright marker. These are used at social gatherings when folks may not know each other as a way to “break the ice.” But how many times have you found yourself wearing the wrong nametag? Not literally, but figuratively. Have those around you labeled you with words that you feel confined by? Have the mistakes of your past entrapped you and kept you from moving forward? Do you live up to your name, whether it’s good or bad? Statistics say we do.
My pastor, Ed Young, of Fellowship Church spoke recently on this topic giving excellent insight. God alone has the ability to change our name from lost to adopted, from sinner to righteous, from unworthy to holy, from child of the world to child of God, from cursed to blessed. Believing these truths changes your perspective and your name.
In this big picture perspective, Matthew West accurately describes this concept of names we wear and how God can forgive the past and give us a new name with a new start with an eternal security. We are defined by our identity in Christ, simply by who we are in Him, NOT what we do. Spend a moment and let that truth soak into your soul. Be encouraged.
